A clinical study on the efficacy of Swarnaprashana in enhancing immunity and cognitive functions in children
Mridula and Savitri
Background: Swarnaprashana is a classical Ayurvedic pediatric practice mentioned in the Kashyapa Samhita, where Swarna Bhasma (calcined gold) is administered with Ghrita and Madhu for enhancing immunity, intellect, digestion, and overall development. Despite its historical significance, clinical evidence supporting its efficacy in modern pediatric health remains limited.
Aim and Objectives: To assess the efficacy of Swarnaprashana in improving immunity and cognitive functions in children aged 1-5 years, when administered during Pushya Nakshatra over a specified period.
Materials and Methods: An open-label observational study was conducted on 30 healthy children who were administered Swarna Bhasma (2 mg/kg body weight) mixed with Ghrita and Madhu once monthly on Pushya Nakshatra for 6 months. Immunity was assessed through frequency of common illnesses, and cognitive development was evaluated using age-appropriate pediatric assessment scales. Baseline and end-of-study observations were compared.
Observations and Results: A significant reduction was observed in the frequency and severity of respiratory and digestive infections. Improvement in cognitive parameters such as attention span, memory recall, and speech development was also noted in most subjects. No adverse reactions were reported during the course of the study.
Conclusion: Swarnaprashana appears to be a safe and effective traditional practice that supports immunity and cognitive development in early childhood. Regular administration during Pushya Nakshatra may offer holistic benefits as described in classical Ayurvedic texts.
