Cerebral Palsy is a neurological disorder caused by a non-progressive brain injury or malformation that affects movements and posture and can limit activity. Spastic CP is the commonest type affecting 70 – 90% of children globally. In India, the estimated incidence is around 3 per thousand live births. It cannot be correlated with any single disease in Ayurveda, as it is a complex disease characterized by a wide range of clinical features. According to Vagbhat, it is classified into the disease categories of Sahaja (Hereditary) Garbhaja (Congenital) and Jataja (Psychosomatic) types of diseases.
Aim & Objectives: The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy of Ayurvedic interventions, including oral medications and Panchakarma procedures, in improving the condition of patient with spastic cerebral palsy who had previously shown no improvement with conventional treatments.
Material & Method: A 4-year-old female patient presented with a known case of spastic type of CP (unable to walk, slurring of speech, improper neck holding). For this, she had taken treatment for 6 months but no improvement was seen. Then she came to RGGPG Ayurvedic College and Hospital Paprola. The patient was treated with Panchakarma procedures (Udvartana, Abhyanga, Shashtishali Pinda Sweda, Yogbasti) done for 3 weeks and for 5 consecutive cycles along with Shaman Chikitsa.
Results: After completion of treatment (Panchkarama procedures along with internal medications) resulted 60 – 70% improvement in the overall effect of therapy.
Conclusion: This case study determined that the management administered was effective in addressing CP & quality of life can be improved spontaneously.
