Ksheera Dushti in lactating women and its effect on Neonatal Vikaras: An Ayurvedic Exploration
Bikash Koirala and Sudeep Bhandari
Breast milk is considered the most essential nourishment for a newborn, playing a pivotal role in shaping the infant’s immunity, metabolism, and mental development. In Ayurveda, Ksheera or Stanya is revered as a critical upadhatu (sub-tissue) of Rasa Dhatu, and its purity is seen as indispensable for neonatal health. The vitiation of breast milk, termed Ksheera Dushti, is described extensively in classical Ayurvedic texts as a cause of numerous neonatal disorders (Bāla Vikaras). This paper presents an Ayurvedic interpretation of Ksheera Dushti, its etiopathogenesis, clinical signs, and neonatal outcomes. Additionally, the paper correlates these concepts with current scientific evidence on altered breast milk composition and its pathological impact on infants. This integrative understanding aims to offer a holistic perspective on maternal and neonatal health.
